Why it matters that Jeff Bezos is chairing the Met Gala
We’re struggling to pay for the basics. Iran is being bombed. Democratic institutions are being dismantled.
So why have Vogue and the Met Museum honoured Jeff Bezos and his wife as the lead sponsors and co-chairs of the 2026 Met Gala?
Trump’s billionaire bestie bought the Washington Post and told staff the opinion section would write only "in support and defense" of "personal liberties and free markets.” He then cut more than 300 jobs. Meanwhile Bezos spent $75 million on a promotional film about Melania Trump.
Bezos is worth approximately $235 billion. Yet while we pay our taxes, he does everything he can to avoid paying his: giving him a true tax rate of around 1.1%.
While Bezos drinks champagne on his yacht, roughly half of Amazon's frontline warehouse workers are struggling to afford food and housing. Many piss in bottles in fear of losing their jobs.
Millions worldwide watch the Met Gala. We refuse to be used to polish this man’s image.
